Block-based themes are the way of the future. If you’ve been blogging a while, you’re likely rolling your eyes because… whilst, obviously.
Now, WordPress supports a block editor that’s powerful (and optimized) to help sites perform without clunky code, plugins, or builders.
History of block editing
When I started working at Once Coupled in 2018, I had my hands full attempting to convince our bloggers to swap from the classic editor to Gutenberg. Times have changed since then.
In the past, lots of block builders have focused on bringing content creators into their fold for profit. Drag & drop editing, easy-to-use formatting… it all has a BIG appeal. I’ve seen successful bloggers use editors like:
- Divi
- Elementor
- Beaver Builder
- This list could go on for days
the problems that come with block editors that aren’t core wordpress
Man, you guys, this is my SOAPBOX. I could go on for days because my fabulous, intense, career food bloggers have dedicated countless resources to block builders that cause more issues than they initially fixed.
I know, it’s tech, nothing has infinite support without a bit of elbow grease. However, in this scenario, I’ve found bloggers that are:
- Totally trapped: they can’t change their theme without migrating (or ditching) a lot of their content they’ve put blood, sweat & tears into creating.
- Don’t @ me about the blood until you’ve given yourself a 3rd degree burn working on your roux. It’s a rite of passage in my community, and I’ll likely do it a few more times this decade.
- Tech debt: these bloggers, marketers & site owners then have to hire developers to write outdated code that supports the builder because a plugin, theme, or WordPress update broke the editor they’ve put all of their trust (and content) into.
Why trust wordpress blocks, then?
Ok, I’m a conspiracy theorist by nature so I feel like this is a valid point to discuss. To some, it’s going to feel just plain laughable or worthy of a really big eyeroll.
This is kind of like asking “why trust banks with my money” or “why would I workout?”
Don’t get me wrong. There will always be alternatives that are trendy and flashy. Bitcoin over banks. Ozempic over 30 minutes of working out daily. I get it. These tempt me, too.
WordPress is the industry standard recommended for websites for a lot of reasons. Lots of people have become successful using other tactics or platforms. Long-term, though, there are implications. Problems with support. The longevity of outdated builders, or even custom code, is on the way out.
A collective community of developers supporting top-tier websites and companies have come together to create technological advances in native WordPress.
how our theme is built to align with WordPress goals long-term
From what I can tell, WordPress is moving in a direction where additional code and builders are no longer required. Website creation is more accessible to all using top-tier industry standards.
A lot of custom theme developers are shaking in their boots because of this shift. Their themes and hours of work are no longer supported without additional time to undo what’s been broken.
Everyone is empowered to self-support their tech pursuits without years of experience, coding knowledge, or a massive budget to appropriate to the cause.
With Creator Theme, we’re hoping to spearhead this shift. Our years of custom development allows us to template the details that matter out-of-the-box for content creators want to support their tech endeavors with the latest that WordPress has to offer.
